View From News
Graphic Designer
(2016 - 2017)

After my degree, my first full-time job in the design industry was working for View From News, a company that created several newspapers across the South West of England. I worked in a large team, beginning with print advertising design for the newspapers, before expanding to also work on editorial layouts and other promotional printed material, such as event posters.

Working at View From offered a great experience of working alongside a larger team and collaborating with them on various tasks. Due to the quick turnaround required in publishing multiple weekly newspapers I was able to pick up the ability to work at a good pace and develop my ideas and designs quickly.

Unfortunately due to increasing costs I was made redundant alongside several of my fellow new employees, with the company closing down permanantly shortly after.

Vibrant Pulse
Graphic & Web Designer
(2017 - 2020)

After the closure of View From I moved into a Graphic Design position at Vibrant Pulse. While initially working on print design, I quickly acquired web development skills. I learned to use WordPress across multiple themes and builders while on the job, and in my own time learned to use HTML and CSS using online resources. These skills have paid dividens in expanding the kinds of designs I can create and I've continued to expand my knowledge ever since.

I initially worked under another designer at Vibrant Pulse, though after she left I took over as the lead designer and handled the majority of the web development alongside the company owner. Eventually a junior designer was hired, who I worked alongside until the comoany's sale. Other than te afformentioned expansion in my skillset, I was also able to develop much more with regards to working to client briefs and working on projects both collaboratively and independantly.

Abundant Fish
Graphic & Web Designer
(2020 - Current)

During 2020 Vibrant Pulse was sold to a new owner and after some company changes I became the sole Graphic Designer employed by the company. Due to this I took on a lot more responsibilty across all kinds of design and web builds which would have previously been distributed between myself and the other designer. During my time here I've also had the chance to work on projects withAbundant Fish's sister companies to take on an even greater diversity of client types, industries and requirements.

The company encouraged me to develop my skills to much greater extent, giving me more freedom with far larger jobs and the opportunity to tackle much more challenging tasks for larger, more established businesses. I've also built on my skills in HTML and CSS during my time at Abundant Fish, becoming a lot more rounded as a web designer and developer, while also building up my time management, client communication and the diversity of visual styles I've worked with.

Bath Spa University
Ba (Hons) Graphic Design
(2012 - 2015)

After finishing my A levels I moved onto my Ba Hons Graphic Design course, working for 3 years to earn my Upper Second-Class Honours degree qualification. This course gave me first 'proper' taste of design, with a specific focus on graphic design for print, far beyond the capabilities I'd developed working on small freelance projucts and part-time design work for my father's company.

The course was fantastic for broadening my design abilities, particularly my third year which encouraged me to both take on real-world work experience and in my final year major project, which was treated as a long term concept development project all the way from project ideation, audience research to prototyping, working with feedback from the intended audience, and finally design execution. My project, Membrane, was focussed on addressing the discrepency between men and women in skin cancer risk and attitudes to using skin protection. This project can be viewed in my portfolio.

During my third year all students were assigned two-person groups

Overall I found the experience very valuableĀ  in developing my design style, bredth of kowledge and other key skills like working on projects both individually and as part of a larger group of designers.

Word Gets Around
& The Idea Bureau
Work Experience

During the middle half of my third year of university course I was able to secure a work placement with two Taunton-based companies for two days a week, balancing out the 3 days a week I would spend focessed on my degree course. Word Gets Around is a print and advertising based company, while The Idea Bureau is a web-focussed agency. This balance between the two disciplines allowed me to develop skills across multiple disciplines while also giving me a good experience of working on design for real clients.
